Students across Malta were given a unique opportunity to explore the world of Para sport this summer, thanks to a series of awareness sessions delivered by the Malta Paralympic Committee (MPC) as part of the I’mPOSSIBLE Education Programme. Led by educators Christina Borg, Tommy Wallbank and Rachel Cachia, the sessions introduced the values of inclusivity and physical activity for all.
The sessions were delivered in both mainstream education centres and specialist Resource Centres catering to students with a range of types and severity of disability. Each session was designed to educate, inspire, and empower young students by introducing them to the world of Para sport and the challenges and triumphs of athletes with disabilities in a practical manner.
Activities included blindfolded games such as goalball and VI athletics, giving them a glimpse into the experiences of visually impaired athletes. Students were also invited to reflect on disability and sport through interactive discussions and were encouraged to identify how sports can be adapted for all through creative thinking and a critical mindset. In total, MPC visited , three Resource Centres and 27 schools, reaching an estimated 400+ students over the summer months.
This is the second year running in which MPC delivered sessions as part of the Government of Malta’s Skola Sajf education programme. Participating educators highlighted the importance of continued professional development to enhance the holistic school experience for students with and without disabilities, in a manner which is fun, engaging and educational.
“These sessions are more than just summer fun activities and games”, said MPC educator and impact officer Rachel Cachia: “They are about showing every student that sport and physical activity is for everyone and that everyone belongs. It offers students with diverse abilities and disabilities with a tool to participate in sport, promoting social inclusion and development.”
Malta Paralympic Committee extends its heartfelt thanks to APS Bank, MPC’s official partner and sponsor for the I’mPOSSIBLE Education Programme.
MPC also extends its gratitude to its student volunteers, Tommy Wallbank - an athlete himself pursuing an undergraduate degree in sport and physical activity at the Institute for Sport and Physical Education at the University of Malta, and Christina Borg - a medical student at the University of Malta, for championing the project and spreading the Paralympic values of courage, determination, inspiration and equality among students.
