Record number of athletes nominated
A record 26 candidates have been nominated for election during the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games to fill six summer representative roles on the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletes‘ Council. One of the candidates contesting the position is Malta’s own Paralympic swimmer, Vladyslava Kravchenko, who will be seeking re-election on the Council for a second term.
The IPC Athletes’ Council is a group of elected athlete representatives who act as the voice of the Para athlete community to the IPC. The election will take place from 26 August to 5 September during the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. The Athletes’ Council acts as the liaison between athletes and decision-makers and influences how Paralympic sport and the Movement grow and develop globally.
Kravchenko is a two time Paralympian and an award winning Para sport advocate. In 2016 she became Malta’s first female swimmer and first female athlete since 1980 to represent the country at the Paralympic Games, repeating the feat in Tokyo 2020. She supported the formal re-establishment of the Malta Paralympic Committee in 2018 and has been a Board Member since then. She graduated as a Master of Science in Sport Management, Politics and International Development from Loughborough University, as a recipient of the Malta Sports Scholarship, and was recently awarded an academic scholarship by the Loughborough University London to pursue a PhD in Diplomacy and International Governance. Upon announcement of her nomination, Vladyslava commented:
“I am committed to being an active voice for athletes from regions where Para sport is still in its nascent stages, including small states, developing nations, regions in conflict, and countries with recently established National Paralympic Committees. My personal journey and academic pursuits have equipped me with the empathy, knowledge, and determination needed to drive meaningful change. I am confident that together, we can create a more supportive environment for all Para athletes, regardless of their geographic, political, and economic circumstances.”
