MPC ANNOUNCES NEW TEAM AND VISION 2028

Malta Paralympic Committee (MPC) announced its vision for Para Sport and newly elected members of its executive committee during its annual general meeting.

Addressing national sports federations, associations, sports clubs, athletes and stakeholders, MPC launched its four-pillar strategy leading to the Los Angeles Paralympic Games 2028, driven by its ethos of Inclusion meets Excellence.

Reflecting on key highlights from the past years, MPC recalled how a small grouping of around 15 athletes in 2018 has grown to a community of over 75 athletes, across a wider pool of sports and a diverse range of physical, visual, hearing and intellectual impairments. MPC emphasised how collaborations with partners in sport, disability and education have been pivotal to changing perceptions towards persons with disabilities in Malta, to provide better opportunities to access sport in a meaningful and dignified manner.

MPC thanked all individual athletes and their families for their positive approach - “Athletes with disabilities face many challenges, but they all have one common trait - the willpower to overcome adversity through unmatched courage and determination. All athletes are role models. As a country, we owe a duty to support the Paralympic community to thrive and to remind us all that we should always see the person behind the disability.”

Looking ahead to 2028, MPC is energised to take the organisation to the next level, to deliver a quality service and innovation. MPC also announced key partners who will support its journey, with leading organisations including APS Bank, Deloitte, Ganado Advocates, BMIT plc, the Ministry for Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector and the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation. MPC also thanked supporters who continue to contribute to its success, including the International Paralympic Committee, the Maltese Olympic Committee, Sport Malta, the Authority for Integrity in Maltese Sport, The Malta Trust Foundation, The Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, The Maltese Society of Physical Rehabilitation and Medicine, among others.

At the AGM, members present elected the new executive committee, with founding members Prof. Joseph Grima (President), Dr Julian Bajada (Secretary General) and Vladyslava Kravchenko PLY (Treasurer and International Affairs) being confirmed in their roles for another term. The team is joined by a mix of stalwarts and new members bringing fresh perspectives and expertise - Simon Zammit (Vice-President), Maja Theuma PLY (Para Athletes’ Representative), Dr Kristina Rapa Manche (Integrity Officer), Julian Cassar Torregiani (Strategy & PR), and Marilena H. Imbroll (Grassroots and Community Development). MPC expressed its gratitude to outgoing members Dr Laura Demicoli and Noel Aquilina for their longstanding service to Para Sport.

MPC’s Para Athletes’ Council, the consultative forum and voice of local athletes, was also elected, with Maltese Paralympians Maja Theuma PLY and Thomas Borg PLY joined by Para athletes JeanFred Agius, Kurt Farrugia and Nick Mercieca. The council acts as a sounding board for athletes, actively contributing to projects with a focus on education, empowerment and awareness.

Established in 2018, MPC plays an important role in transforming lives and supporting a more inclusive society through the power of Paralympic Sport and the global Paralympic values of Equality, Courage, Determination and Inspiration.

Recognising the impact of sports on individuals, including persons with disabilities, the newly elected Executive Committee made a fresh appeal for more people to join the movement.
